Our Project experience
Overview
Fire Protection Services WA delivered the installation and commissioning of fire detection and emergency warning systems across multiple assets within the Forrestfield-Airport Link program. Works covered three stations, egress infrastructure and tunnel interfaces, with full integration to the Public Transport Authority’s ONYX platform.
Scope of Work
- Installation and commissioning of the fire detection system and Emergency Warning System (EWS) across:
- Perth Airport Train Station
- Emergency egress infrastructure:
- 3 emergency egress shafts
- 13 cross passages within the train tunnel
- Linear heat fibre cable installed along both tunnels, totalling approximately 15 km
- Over 100 gas suppression systems completed across the site
- VESDA systems installed as part of the projects smoke control system
- All sites programmed back to the PTA’s ONYX system
Project Details
Planning and Coordination - Sequenced works to align with station access windows and tunnel safety protocols
- Coordinated interfaces between station plant rooms, tunnel equipment and central controls
Installation - Deployed linear heat detection and addressable detection devices to suit each asset
- Installed and terminated cabling for detection, EWS, suppression and smoke control interfaces
- Set out devices within stations, shafts and cross passages to design drawings and compliance standards
Commissioning - Device-by-device verification and functional testing for detection, EWS and suppression systems
- Integrated cause-and-effect testing, including VESDA and smoke control logic
- Programmed and verified site-wide reporting to the PTA’s ONYX platform
Challenges and Solutions
Multi-asset coordination - Managed concurrent works across three stations, egress shafts and tunnel cross passages through staged delivery and clear interface control.
Tunnel environment constraints - Implemented robust installation and testing plans for linear heat fibre cable to suit long-run tunnel conditions.
Complex cause and effect - Structured commissioning plans to validate detection, EWS, suppression and VESDA sequences prior to ONYX integration.
Outcome
- Commissioning completed with approvals supported by test records and as-built documentation
- All assets verified to report to the PTA’s ONYX platform for centralised monitoring and control
Client Response
The client reported a positive outcome. They noted that FPSWA coordinated works across the stations, egress shafts and tunnel cross passages with minimal disruption to the broader program. Cause-and-effect testing was described as thorough, integration to the PTA’s ONYX platform was delivered on schedule, and the handover documentation was clear and complete.
